A brief summary of Setareh Abbasi's presentation at the three day memorial conference for the victims of the 1980s massacre.
The Dark Room
....Khuzistan, the prisons and torture chambers of Ahwaz, the Desert Committee, Operations committee and dark rooms....darkness as black as the history of our country, dark as the blackness of the fate of anonymous political prisoners who lost their lives in the torture chambers, committed suicide or under torture joined the many noble martyrs of the political and revolutionary movement.
I would like to cast a glance at the non-descript prisons during the years 1362 (1982)and 1363 (1985), to talk about the endless interrogations and of the amazing ….from another perspective at the lives of my fellow inmates.
In 1362 (1982), I was once again snitched upon. It was the second time I was being exposed...there were many more times ahead. I am taken to the desert committee in one of the neighborhoods of Ahwaz....the interrogation begin again...they wanted the coordinates of the weapons caches, the address of the workers they had not caught, all the relationships that had not been exposed. To capture information, in addition to common torture techniques such as using cables and beating, the desert committe had added a closet and a hot room to the instruments available to the torturers of Ahwaz. In the closet, you could only sit hunched on your knees. Blindfolded, I endured a month in the closet...but the hot room awaited me. In the 40-50' Celsius heat of Ahwaz, we were crammed into a room without ventilation. Things did not end with the desert committee....the forty days in the hot room were a mere introduction to the torture under the committee of operations, the dark room. In this talk, I will focus on the dark room.
